Construction of US$190 million Zanzibar Teaching Hospital to commence soon

The construction of US$ 190 million (Sh475 billion) Zanzibar referral and teaching hospital with 500-bed capacity is expected to commence soon after the government had acquired a US$163.6 million concessional loan from the South Korea’s Exim Bank.

The loan agreement was signed by the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Union Ministry of Finance, Amina Khamis Shaaban and the Bank’s Director, Sang Yung Lee.

The hospital that will be located at Binguni in Unguja Central District will offer specialised health services and will be equipped with state-of-the-art medical amenities.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary said the new hospital is a landmark undertaking that will provide quality medical care for Zanzibar’s peoples and serve as a training college for doctors and other health professionals.

“This is a land mark project for Zanzibar and Tanzania in general because the hospital that will be built will provide specialised treatment to patients and use it as a training center for medical students,” said the Permanent Secretary.

Dr. Marijani Msafiri, Ministry of Health Medical Director, noted that the project will be a great relief to the congested Mnazimmoja Referral hospital.

The Bank’s Director, Sang Yung Lee, said Korea will continue to support Zanzibar to implement its goals of providing better health services to its people.
