Road crashes claim 26 deaths in two months

AT least 26 people have been reported dead in road crashes in the last two months, 16 of whom were killed last month.

The Office of Chief Government Statistician (OCGS) statistician, Ramla Hassan Pandu, told the Zanzibar Mail that the deaths were caused by 36 road crashes that happened between June and July 2023.

“The 36 road crashes involved 76 victims in which 26 of whom were killed while 50 victims sustained injuries during the past two months,” she said.

She added that the fatalities registered involved drivers, motorcycle riders and pedestrians, with speeding being the main cause of the crashes.

Over the past three years, traffic crashes continued to increase in the Isles roads.

Ramla noted that during the months under review, traffic police arrested 6,413 suspects across the country for violating traffic rules and regulations.

The suspects were arrested for offences including reckless driving, driving motor vehicles in dangerous mechanical condition, driving without valid permits, seat belt and speeding.
